Ready for the Next Step
With the award-winning Motonext program, Ten Kate Racing is ready to take the next step. Following a successful period of developing new technologies and products for motorsports and industry, several new and high-profile projects have been prepared — and some are already underway.
Four years ago, an innovative and sustainable motorcycle fairing was developed. These fairing parts and fenders were used on the Yamaha R6, the bike on which Dominique Aegerter won the World Supersport Championship twice. Instead of using carbon, polyester, or plastic, a bio-based flax composite was developed and applied, resulting in a CO2 reduction of over 90% during production and use. This bioflax material has broad applications, extending beyond motorsports into industrial use.
Together with partner Putoline, used oil was given a second and even a third life. In 2025, Putoline developed a bio-based oil within the Motonext framework, now available to every motorcyclist. The bottles used for this oil consist of 95% recycled material. Circular usage is again one of the central themes here.
In its new projects, Motonext focuses on circular use and so-called chain systems. The bioflax used for motorcycle parts, such as fairings, must be reusable and given a second life. At the same time, in collaboration with partners New Born Rubber and MC Technics, research is being conducted into how natural materials like bamboo can be applied. The goal is to use raw materials that do not compete with the food industry. Motonext has also initiated research with the Arnhem and Nijmegen University of Applied Sciences to explore how bioflax can be used for load-bearing components in motorcycles and cars.
In cooperation with New Born Rubber and the University of Groningen, the “Tires for Tires” project has begun. The patented technology developed there is being used to create new products from used racing tires. With support from partner Hocoparts, a Gaerne racing boot is being developed, as well as new race tires. This ensures that Pirelli racing tires are used in a fully circular way. The first examples were showcased during the presentation of the Motonext plans at the TT Circuit Assen.
As mentioned earlier, Motonext is not only focused on technology and product development for motorsports. Together with various project partners – including Visser, Envecotricity, New Born Rubber, and insights from the HAN research – an innovative electric ambulance is being developed for UMCG Ambulance Care. The prototype has existed for some time, but thanks to the expertise of the Motonext partners, the goal is now to make it operationally deployable. UMCG Ambulance Care has been a frontrunner in innovation for years. For instance, it developed the most sustainable ambulance station in Europe, located in Assen. The organization generates 75% of the energy needed for its 27 locations through solar power. Additionally, 99% of its support vehicles are now electric.
